The Stride For Life for Cancer Research UK took place on May 24th 2009 at 12 noon. Locals and islanders were encouraged to walk, run or jog a 5k course to raise sponsorship money. The route took participants out of town to Old Town, to Parting Carn and then to Telegraph Road to Porthloo and back into Hughtown past Sandybanks and Radio Scilly. More people than last year participated, 155. 147 entered in 2008. This has pleased organisers Sarah Twynham. Jo Kan and Beryl Read and this year's Stride was on a very hot day, 14c and sunny. That usually encourages people to go off-island.
The first male runner was Johan, a Romanian who has been in the Uk for 10 years and is on holiday in Scilly with his partner.
